Multiple Incidents Involving Improvised Incendiary Devices

June 26, 2019, a 41-year-old male allegedly intentionally set two fires in Gresham, Oregon one of which involved an Improvised Incendiary Device (IID). Witnesses report that the suspect threw a molotov cocktail-type device at his neighbor’s garage door.

June 28, 2019, a man in Quincy, Massachusetts was arrested for attacking a local business owner and targeting the business with IIDs. It is believed that the suspect was trying to rob the business owner when the two got into an altercation. Following the altercation the suspect fled the scene. Approximately one hour later the suspect returned with several Molotov cocktails in an attempt to burn down the business.

June 28, 2019, North Little Rock Police in Arkansas arrested a 75-year-old suspect for throwing an IID described as a Molotov cocktail that injured a woman and a 2-year-old child during a dispute over a missing gas can. The child was hospitalized for non-life threatening burns while the woman was treated at the scene.

IED Detonated in a Pennsylvania Neighborhood

On May 22, 2019, an IED described as a duct taped soda can with an orange fuse detonated on the road in front of a private residence. An eyewitness to the event described stated that a gray pickup truck with a male driver dumped something out on the road. The vehicle quickly drove away as the device detonated sending shrapnel flying and striking nearby resistances. Local police, Bethlehem Fire Department Bomb Squad, and ATF responded to the incident.

Florida: Army Veteran Arrested for Emplacing IED at VA Hospital

On June 4, 2019, a 60-year-old Army veteran from St. Petersburg was detained after authorities connected him to an IED emplaced at a Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital in Bay Pines. On 29 May 2019, Tampa Police Department (TPD) officers responded to reports of a suspicious package at the VA Hospital.The TPD Bomb Squad determined the suspicious package was an IED containing a 9-volt battery, electrical wires, an improvised initiator described as a tube with a light bulb, an unidentified black powder later determined to be consistent with pyrotechnic-type powder, and a clothes pin switch. On 31 May, the suspect’s wife reported to law enforcement that her husband had made an IED at their home. Upon further investigation, authorities determined both devices were similarly manufactured and arrested the suspect after recovering CCTV showing the him placing the IED at the hospital. The suspect was charged with possession of unregistered explosive devices.

Tennessee Authorities Discover Four IEDs on the Roadway & in a Home

June 12, 2019, two inmates out on a work program from the Coffee County, TN jail discovered an IED in a ditch while mowing grass near a Manchester intersection. The Manchester Police Department (MPD), Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), and ATF responded to the scene. A second device was discovered about 30 to 45 yards from the first device in front of a private residence.

MPD officers conducted a search of a suspect’s home connected with the two devices found at the roadway, discovering two additional IEDs. The devices appeared to be homemade pipe bombs made from 8 to 10 inches of metal piping. THP collected the devices for a controlled detonation. The suspect, who told officers he threw the bombs on the street to scare his girlfriend, was charged with four counts of possessing a prohibited weapon.

Two Explosive Devices Discovered in Connection with Narcotics Cases

On May 31, 2019, agents from the Pennsylvania State Patrol discovered pyrotechnic devices and suspected synthetic cannabis in a backpack in a Lancaster area residence. The State Police Hazardous Device and Explosives Section identified the explosive as commercial fireworks and an M-class explosive device wrapped in red electrical tape to give it the appearance of dynamite. The devices were removed from the scene and destroyed by State Police.

On June 1, 2019, a 31-year-old male was arrested after a traffic stop and search of his vehicle by authorities in West Virginia which led to the discovery of an Improvise Explosive Device (IED), Methamphetamines, and firearms. Police officers discovered a hand grenade with the original fuse still intact, but the core removed and replaced with gun powder, metal beads, and metal wire.
